Common Name: none
Synonyms: Lachnum bicolor (Bull.) P. Karst.; Dasyscyphus bicolor (Bull.) Fuckel
For description see Seaver, Beug et al., & 'California Mushrooms'.
Gregarious on dead branches of alder, willow, and other hardwoods in riparian habitats; common, fruiting in spring in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges.
Unknown.
Capitotricha bicolor is a common, spring-fruiting cup fungus in its riparian habitats, forming tiny, saucer- or cup-shaped fruitbodies with yellowish orange hymenium and contrasting hairy white external surface. In dry weather, the cups shrivel and appear as tiny, hairy white spheres, but when moistened from rain or high humidity, they revive and expose the brightly pigmented spore-bearing surface. Lachnellula calyciformis is almost indistinguishable, but it grows on conifer wood and has ellipsoid spores not fusoid spores.
