Solitary to scattered on rotting conifer wood; fruiting from fall through mid-winter in coastal forests from Santa Cruz County northward. Rare south of Sonoma County.
Unknown.
Pholiota astragalina can be distinguished by a smooth, viscid, pinkish orange cap that develops black spots, yellowish orange gills, and a slender, yellow to orange stipe. Hypholoma species are similar but typically grow in cespitose clusters and have dry caps and purplish brown spores.
