Solitary to scattered on living plum trees; uncommon, fruiting year-round, widely distributed.
Inedible, woody.
Phellinus pomaceus can be distinguished by it hard, woody, hoof shaped, growth on plum and related species of Prunus, crusty, dark brown to black upper surface, and grayish brown to purplish brown pore surface. Phellinus pomaceus is a destructive pathogen of living plum trees, causing a white rot of heartwood. Phellinus pomaceus belongs to a group of closely related species that are best separated by substrate. Phellinus pomaceus is restricted to plums and related species; Phellinus igniarius occurs on alder, bay laurel, maple, and chinquapin; Phellinus arctostaphyli, on madrone and manzanita; Phellinus tremulae prefers aspen.
