Solitary to scattered in soil or on rotten wood of conifers; rare, fruiting in fall in coastal conifer forests from Sonoma County northward.

Hypocrea alutacea is a rarely encountered club-shaped ascomycete that can be distinguished by its cream to pale ochraceous head covered with small pimples and a white, smooth stipe. It looks like a small Clavariadelphus, such as Clavariadelphus occidentalis or Clavariadelphus ligula, but they are basidiomycetes with softer, more fragile fruitbodies that lack a minutely warted, spore-producing surface.
