Solitary to scattered to gregarious in coniferous forests, especially in beds of moss. Common in northern coastal California.
Unknown.
Cystoderma amianthinum is a small, attractive mushroom distinguished by its granular stipe and cap, ocher color, and weak partial veil. Cystoderma carcharias var. fallax is larger, a bit darker in coloration, and with a persistent veil. Cystodermella cinnabarina is much brighter colored with a brick red cap.
