Terrestrial, solitary to scattered to gregarious or in fused clusters, in soil under conifers; common, fruiting from late summer through fall at high elevations in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges, rarely along the coast.
Edible.
Albatrellus ellisii is distinguished by its felted-tomentose to coarsely scaly, yellowish brown to greenish yellow cap, white to cream pores, a central to lateral yellowish brown stipe, and tissues that bruise green. It is commonly collected in fused clusters, partially buried under conifers in montane habitats. Scutiger pes-caprae is similar but has a plush to finely scaly, brown to reddish brown cap and tissues that do not bruise green.
