Die Blätterpilze: 332. 1914
Common Name: none
Synonyms: Armillaria zelleri D.E. Stuntz & A.H. Sm.; Tricholoma zelleri (D.E. Stuntz & A.H. Sm.) Ovrebo & Tylutki
For description see Shanks, Smith, Siegel & Schwarz, & 'California Mushrooms'.
Scattered to gregarious in duff under conifers (especially pine), tanoak, and madrone; uncommon, fruiting from fall to mid-winter in coastal and montane forests.
Inedible, bitter.
Tricholoma focale can be distinguished by a viscid, orangish brown cap with streaks of yellow, olive, and deep orange, and a stipe with a persistent, cottony-membranous annulus. Tricholoma aurantium is similar in coloration but lacks a partial veil and has belts of orange fibrils on the stipe; it is rare in coastal forests from Humboldt County northward. Floccularia albolanaripes has a yellow to yellow-brown cap that lacks the orange and olive tones of Tricholoma focale, a flocculent white partial veil, and a similar shaggy-scaly stipe.
